I looked outside on October 29, 2023, and I saw the first blue jay of the season. It pecked around in the grass beneath the dogwood tree. The dogwoods in my front yard are the territory of the mockingbirds. However, every once in a while, I’ll spot several blue jays or sometimes even cardinals in those trees.
The proud blue jay with its striking plumage flew up quickly and landed on a branch. I admired its light and dark blues, its bands and stripes, its blacks and whites. So many colors and designs on one bird.
Soon another blue jay appeared. It flew up to challenge the first. They darted around the tree in short aggressive bursts. Their small battle never resolved though, and they eventually deferred it for the time being.
It was taking everything in me not to pull out my camera. Blue jays are my favorite bird, but I do not see them often. So, when I do spot them, those are special moments. Just me enjoying nature; me watching for what’s next in nature’s saga. To pull out my camera in that moment would take away from the moment’s special purpose for me. Everything we see becomes a part of who we are. Treasure the special moments that were made just for you.
Dancing, or singing by yourself or with company does not always need to be recorded. A conversation between two does not always need to be shared with a third. A picturesque sunset doesn’t have to be a picture. These things simply add to the beauty of us as individuals. These moments are shared through just being.
Perhaps your joy comes from singing and dancing; and your thoughtfulness comes from those conversations; and your appreciation for the little things comes from admiring the sunset that only lasts for a few minutes.
Embrace and appreciate the special moments that were made just for you and make you the beautiful person that you are.
